Bug Club

Bug Club

Mawnan School is excited to offer a fantastic reading scheme called Bug Club. It is available to all children from Reception to Year 3.

Below you will find key information about the scheme and how you can get involved at home. We hope that you and your child will love these books and enjoy reading them together.

What is Bug Club?

Bug Club is a finely levelled reading scheme designed to ensure that every child can access books that are exactly the right level for them. This helps to build confidence, fluency and a love of reading.

Getting Involved as a Parent

You play a vital role in supporting your child’s reading journey. Here are some ways you can help:

Before reading

  • Look at the book cover together and discuss your child’s expectations.

  • Is the book likely to be fiction or non-fiction?

  • Have you read other books about these characters or by this author?

  • What does your child think the book might be about?

During reading

  • Support your child with unfamiliar words by:

    • Sounding them out

    • Breaking them into syllables

    • Identifying prefixes or suffixes

  • Encourage your child to listen to themselves as they read to check that it makes sense.

  • Pause occasionally for a quick “meaning check” to ensure they understand what they have read.

After reading

  • Talk about the book together.

  • What was it about? Did it match their expectations?

  • Ask questions beginning with how and why to encourage deeper thinking.

  • Was anything puzzling?

  • What were the best and worst parts of the book, and why?

We hope your child enjoys reading with Bug Club and develops a lifelong love of books.

If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s teacher.
